 Abstract:  Andrew W. McCormick (b. 1830) was a Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, native who was editor and publisher of the Marietta Republican. He was a captain in the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was captured twice during the American Civil War. Afterwards he entered law practice and became a Probate Court Judge in Washington County, Ohio. The collection consists of memoirs written during a trip to Colorado in 1893-1894, and a history of the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, with an account of McCormick's experiences as a prisoner of war.

 Abstract:  John McLeish was born in Scotland, arriving in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1830s. During the American Civil War, he served in the 9th Ohio Independent Battery, organized in Cleveland in 1861 and trained at Camp Wood, Ohio. In December 1862, McLeish and several others in the battery were discharged for ill health. The collection consists of two diaries, one written anonymously and the other written by Private John McLeish. The anonymous diary chronicles the writer's service in the 9th Ohio Independent Battery from January 10-August 31, 1862. McLeish's diary begins on September 1, 1862, and ends on December 14, 1862, several days before his discharge.

 Abstract:  The Sohl Family is a Cleveland, Ohio, family of German-Americans, descended from Johann Georg Sohl (anglicized to George Sohl) who settled in Cleveland in 1840. His son, Gustav, married Mary Goodrich, whose father, George Elliott Goodrich, served in the 124th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War and was one of the soldiers assigned to escort the body of President Lincoln from Washington to Illinois. His grandson, Ralph William Sohl, was an engineer for a tire and rubber company. The collection consists of George Sohl's passport and related papers, his will, Sohl family correspondence, deeds and other records relating to property in Egg Harbor, N.J., cemetery lot purchase records, birth and death certificates for Ralph William Sohl, and Goodrich family papers, including a marriage certificate, civil war correspondence, and a copy of the order for troops to accompany Lincoln's body to Illinois. Included in the correspondence is a letter from George Goodrich expressing his feelings about the assassination of Lincoln.

He was wounded and captured on May 27, 1864 near Altoona, Georgia. His whereabouts were reported as unknown at the end of the war. He participated in the battles of Tullahoma, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga, and, later, served with Sherman in Georgia. The collection consists of a Civil War diary, communication from the War Department to Anderton's father, receipt for money wired home, and a scrap claimed to be from Anderton's brigade flag.

 Abstract:  George E. Dunbar, a farm laborer from Newburgh, Ohio, enlisted in Company B, Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, at Camp Wade in Cleveland, Ohio, in August 1861. Trained at Camp Dennison, Ohio, his company left for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in January 1862, Dunbar having been appointed sergeant and later quartermaster sergeant. While the regiment was defending the Kansas and Missouri borders during the Civil War, Dunbar became ill and was discharged on October 2, 1862, returning after a lengthy journey home via wagon and train to Newburgh. The collection consists of a single volume containing a chronicle of Dunbar's service in Company B, Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, from January to October 1862, and an anonymous entry, dated February 29, 1864, concerning a business trip to Cleveland.

 Abstract:  The Richards family settled in Hinckley Township, Medina County, Ohio, prior to 1838. Willard Richards married Alvira Ann Whedon in 1838, and they raised seven children. In 1861, their eldest son, Myron, enlisted in Battery A, First Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery. He returned to farming in Hinckley Township in 1865, and the following year, married Romelia Noragon. They raised two children, Oliver Richards and Margie Richards. In 1891, the Richards family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. In the 1910s, Margie Richards became a physical education instructor at the University of California, Southern Branch (University of California, Los Angeles). The collection consists of correspondence, certificates, journals, genealogical notes, wills, military papers, and legal documents.

 Abstract:  Stanley G. Lockwood (1789-1860) moved from Connecticut to Painesville, Ohio, where he opened a general store, in 1835. His sons, George D. Lockwood (1830-1874) and John S. Lockwood (born 1834), continued the firm. In 1856 George moved to Davenport, Iowa and opened another store, Livingston and Lockwood. During the American Civil War he was an officer in Companies D and I of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother, Stanley B. Lockwood (1840-1884), served in Company G. of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Regiment and in Company K of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The collection consists of correspondence, military records, financial records, diaries, and newspaper clippings. A major topic of the correspondence is the American Civil War.

 Abstract:  Cyrus H. Stockwell (died 1864) was a soldier in Company G, 77th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He enlisted on September 1, 1862. He was wounded during battle at Sabrine Crossroads, near New Orleans in April 1864, and died on May 13, 1864, at the age of 32, at New Orleans, Louisiana. He is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Acton, Massachusetts. Stockwell spent some time on patrol boats in and around Louisiana and Texas. The collection consists of thirteen letters and three diaries written by Stockwell during the Civil War.

 Abstract:  John McMeekin was a soldier in the 144th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. The collection consists primarily of letters from McMeekin to his mother, Hannah McMeekin, of Washington, Fayette County, Ohio, while he was stationed at Camp Marietta, Ohio, and in various camps in Tennessee, Louisiana, and Mississippi, during the Civil War.
